Notes: The conclusion of the 2008 - 2009 Concert Season for the Fullerton College Symphony was exciting to say the least! The orchestra performed two World Premiere compositions by local Vietnamese composer, Le Van Khoa. Khoa is based in Orange, CA and his compositions are quite popular, especially in among the Vietnamese-American community in Westminster and Garden Grove. As a result, the event was featured in the Viet Dong Daily Newspaper and there was a camera crew from VHN-TV, a local Vietnamese television station. For more info on Le Van Khoa, visit www.levankhoa.com.
The featured soloist was Hoang Nguyen, a highly talented and gifted pianist from Vietnam who is currently completing a Master's Degree at Cal-State Fullerton. His performance of the 2nd Piano Concerto by Chopin was quite stunning, passionate, and graceful. You can find out more about him at www.hoangnguyen.net.
The Co-Concertmaster of the FC Symphony, Mira Khomik, performed the violin solo in Khoa's most recent composition entitled "Dream" and the program concluded with the 1919 version of Stravinsky's Firebird Suite.

Notes: The event on January 25th was a huge success and was filled with energy and excitement from both the orchestra and the audience. The program featured guest soloist Susan Ali, who is currently part of the vocal faculty at Fullerton College. In addition to performing the soprano solo in the 4th movement of the Mahler Symphony, she also came back on stage to perform "Habanera" from Carmen as an encore!
The program opened with a performance by the Irvine Young Concert Artists, a talented young ensemble based in Irvine and also conducted by Dean Anderson (www.irvineyoungconcertartists.org). The group performed the first movement from Mozart's Symphony No. 29 and the "Aase's Death" portion from the Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 by Grieg.
